Some beautiful aquariums, terrariums, frogs, lizards and fish from our customers

Beautiful wild Peru Angels from Aquariums West in Dave's newly redesigned aquarium. He is trying his hand at a planted aquarium after switching from African Cichlids. The tank is stunning. Well done! More angels coming.
|
 |
The Blue streaks are the extremely fast Cardinal Tetras. What a beautiful image. |
 |
Dave designed and built this custom aquarium stand. Now that is an aquarium! |

Closeup of Java Fern tied to Manzanita wood and Eleocharis and Lileopsis growing in the foreground. |
 |

Kevin has been working on his "Amano" design which is coming along beautifully. The java moss is beginning to look like trees and the fish are the birds in the sky.
In the top right corner he has some baby Blueberry shrimp growing! Close-up picture on left. Well done Kevin, the tank looks beautiful. The shrimp are growing in the plant Süßwassertang (means "freshwater seaweed" in German). This is a very rare liverwort and is recommended for shrimp tanks. |

Here is a picture of the Fish Condo designed by Teddy Luong. Scott just set it up for his Betta "Slurpy".

 |
Beautiful pair of Discus spawning in Jack's aquarium, photos by Jack Heydarian. The female Discus is swimming over the spawning site (which has been cleaned meticulously beforehand) and is depositing her eggs in rows. Look for the small white eggs on the piece of Mazanita wood. Discus similar to these are available at Aquariums West. New Shipments from a Jakarta breeder arrive about once a month. |
 |
The male swims behind her and promptly fertilizes them. Once the eggs hatch, the free swimming fry will eat off the scales of their parents. |
 |
They diligently guard the eggs and become very territorial with the other fish in the aquarium. Discus fish make great parents. They will fan fresh water over the eggs to ensure high levels of oxygen and they will also remove any unfertilized eggs to prevent bacteria growth and mould. |

I came in about 2.5 weeks ago and purchased an incredibly lovely crested gecko from your store. Kreig was helpful, and he mentioned that if I had any good pictures of her in the future that I could send them your way! So I have in fact done that and have attached a few photos of her. We named her "Eden" because I think that she has the most beautiful combination of natural and rich colors. She has settled in very nicely and seems to be extremely comfortable with her new home and she is eating extremely well!
|
We have introduced her to on multiple occasions (for short periods of time) to her new "friend" named Immie. He is much larger than her still and is currently being very aggressive. In the pic with two crested geckos, Eden is in front of Immie. Maybe one day they will be more then just terrarium neighbors and occasional visiting friends. Hope you enjoy the pictures!
Thank you very much for your services, and introducing me to another wonderful crested creature!

"Here are two pictures of our boy Herb. He's been with us almost 2 years now and we love him to bits....we bought him from you in February 2010 when you were at your old location on Burrard. Thanks for all your help! We love you, Claire and Dustin to bits." |
This is an amazing closeup of Herb. He is a Super Delta Tail Male Betta which originally came from Florida and was purchased from Aquariums West. The customers have just graduated to a Fluval Edge 12 Gallon aquarium and are having lots of fun designing it. Pictures coming soon? |
These pictures are from Darren who decided to try a Saltwater Nano Aquarium in a Fluval Spec 2 Gallon. The tank looks so beautiful. Although we don't recommend doing this in such a small aquarium, with patience and research, you can definitely see by these pictures, that it can be done. I am hoping to have updates and possibly a "How To" from Darren.

"...Here's a few pictures of my pico reef tank and several of its inhabitants, a baby o. clown, a green clown goby, a hermit crab, astrea snail and a bunch of non-identified corals...." All livestock purchased at Aquariums West. The live rock is particularly nice and we have lots in stock. |
 |
 |
"...When I first started this tank I assumed it would be a struggle, one I would embrace, but really it has been much easier than I thought. I just do water changes once a week and it stays extremely stable. Nitrates are always around 5 or less, and I feed them everyday too..." |
"...Don't worry I'll be taking out the clownfish once i set up another tank!..." |

Finished planting and incredible growth only after 1 month. Michael did experience an algae boom but after a UV sterilizer was installed, the tank became crystal clear. |
The plants have really taken off. Great photos Michael! |
Andrew's Dry Start Experience
"Please find attached some shoots of my aquarium I said I would send. It shows the planning stage, dry start stage and submerged stage.
There isn’t much information for fertilizing in the dry start. I think that there was a shortage of potassium at that stage. I cut the yellow leaves off the pigmy anubias prior to submerging. All the leaves grew back with a solid healthy green colour.
The dry start helps build up bacteria and gives good root attachment to the gravel for the dwarf baby tears. This plant is normally difficult to plant. You also get more bang for your buck. I started out with 10 pots of plants but grew them to much greater extent prior to submerging. I had to experiment a little with the plant with fertilizers and water depth in the soil. The water wants to come just to the surface of the gravel and no more or less. Plants higher on the gravel didn’t grow that well.
The photos are a little old and the mat of baby tears is now thicker. There was some long hair algae but that is starting to come under control.
The light green stones (the light green colour is sometimes caused by a copper content) are Haida Gwaii river rock that I did multiple tests on for carbonate and copper content. The stones haven’t affected hardness/PH in over four months of use. There are lots of cherry shrimps (sensitive to copper) that multiply quickly and are doing well. The Christmas moss and dwarf baby tears provide lots of cover for the shrimp.
I wasn’t concerned with the green of the rock clashing with the black eco gravel. I knew the green mat was going to cover the gravel anyways. The black gravel matches the black edge of the aquarium. A different colour of gravel would cause another line of colour (between the black plastic edge of the aquarium and green mat of vegetation) which would have been a more obvious visual distraction".
Fauna: Furcata, Glass Cats, Siamese fighting fish, Cherry Shrimp, Gobies (more to come)
Flora: Christmas moss, Repens, Ludwiga Aquatica (I think), dwarf baby tears, riccia, anubias etc.
GH/KH/PH: 4/4/6.9

What is a Dry Start Planted Aquarium?

Dry Start #1
The idea is that you plant the aquarium and only fill the tank with water until the gravel is submersed. You mist them and cover them with plastic wrap until they develop roots. You avoid the initial creep of algae that can occur in submersed plants during the break in period. Andrew's tank has a thick mat of Hemianthus callitrichoides which can be a difficult plant to grow. Unfortunately, he did still get some algae which has been since been resolved.
Thanks Andrew for the update. |

It's always nice to see a young person who has a keen interest in living creatures and has a passion for learning how to set up natural environments for their pets. Learning about aquariums, reptiles, fish and other exotic animals is like a continuous Biology and Chemistry lesson. So many young people are plugged into their computers and TV's for hours on end. That has its benefits, hand eye coordination, being able to process and read information quickly, figuring out problems etc. but it is all based in the virtual world. Learning how to keep animals alive is based in the real world with real world consequences! I find that young people who have a keen interest in keeping exotic pets and plants are so much more engaged in talking to adults about these subjects. There doesn't seem to be any boundaries between the ages. Currently, we have a young man who just turned 13 (Happy Birthday Jesse and welcome to being a teenager) and is our latest shining star.
Here are a few pictures of what keeps Jesse occupied when he gets home from school. He has a 100 Gallon Exo-Terra Terrarium full of live orchids; Tlllandzias, Bromeliads and other tropical plants. Inside this habitat are 2 Ranitomeya benedicta Poison Dart Frogs, and 4 Phelsuma klemmeri Micro Day Gecko's. They are some of the rarest Amphibians and Geckos in the world. He also has a Red Tailed Coral Albino Boa Constrictor, a Praying Mantis, a 40 Gallon tropical fish tank and a 65lb Bull Terrier named Texas.
What he is learning while he tends to his flock is priceless. We hope that when he gets a little bit older he will work in the store! And congratulations to his mother Barb, who supports and encourages a Naturalist in the making.
Thanks Jesse for sending me your pictures!

Andrew's Fluval Ebi 8 Gallon Nano Aquarium
So here is a picture of my planted Fluval Ebi. It’s two weeks old cycling using the planted tank approach. 2 neon tetra and 3 otos are residents.
Fully loaded – double lights, co2, extra Fluval Shrimp stratum. Well done Andrew, you have learned so much about biology and chemistry that you are now teaching us things that we don't know! Thank you! |
Dave's 72 Gallon Bowfront Aquarium
"My 72 gallon bowfront Malawi cichlid aquarium. I designed and built the custom stand using Baltic birch plywood and glass block. Inside the tank I'm using an Aquaterra background combined with crushed coral sand, local rock and live plants." cheers,
Dave
What a gorgeous aquarium you have designed and built! I want one like that in my livingroom! The glass blocks look amazing. |

Kendall's Fluval Edge 6 Gallon Aquarium.
"Here are a few photos of my Fluval Edge that I promised to send to you. The lighting store is GBL Lighting. I converted the stock lighting to MR16 LED (a little bit of know-how required). The silver bars have LED strips in them. I painted them to blend in. I didn't want to ruin the aesthetic of the Edge. I'm trying to learn how to achieve a good carpet, so I haven't trimed the Hairgrass yet. I hope you like it," Kendall

Kendall's Fluval Edge 6 Gallon Aquarium.
Thanks Kendall for your pictures. The tank looks stunning and the lighting makes such a difference. That is one spoiled Betta! We now have Marineland LED light strips that fit across the top of the tank perfectly to add more light. They also have built in "moon lights" for night time viewing. What is the plant that you have growing on the surface?

How would you like to have a personal assistant that never talks back, is always happy to see you each morning, entertains you, works diligently on his computer, and is extremely handsome? This is Jake the Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta splendens) who has his own desk, laptop and research books (thanks to Barbie). He has been working side by side with his boss Karina for a year at the Vancouver Foundation in Vancouver, B.C.
He just recently had his office redecorated with some fabulous plants.
 |
Crinum calamistratum flowering. |
The crinkly, spidery looking plant is Crinum calamistratum which does really well in low light, grows slowly (so it won't crowd Jake out of his office) and provides a sort of hammock where Jake can hang out during his breaks. When the leaves end up too long they can simply be cut from the top. Under the proper conditions when the plant is well established, is given some direct light and aquatic plant fertilizer, it can actually flower! The flower will appear on a shoot above the water and only blooms for a day, so have your camera ready. The other plant is Dracaena sanderiana (commonly known as Lucky Bamboo) which loves to grow in the water where it's roots help provide filtration and oxygen and will continue to grow out of the water to provide shade and privacy for Jake. Lucky bamboo is native to Cameroon in West Africa and is a popular Feng Shui plant and although the name implies that it is a bamboo, it actually is in no way a member of the true bamboo family.
Hey Jake, thank your boss for sending me your picture. I want an assistant like you!

This is the aquarium of Roberta Rich who recently wrote a book called "The Midwife of Venice" which was a fabulous read. She is working on a sequel which I look forward to reading. Here is a photo of my tank - "Marg and Norm Do Venice and the Grand Canal" I only have two angels because they do not blend with other fish. Cheers, Roberta

Here is another tank last year. Not as fancy as the Venice one. Love your website. Cheers Roberta. |

Jeannie and Staff at Aquariums West,
"I wanted to thank all of you for the great service, products, and most important the vast knowledge you have passed on to me to create an environment for my fish and myself to enjoy. I have attached several photos of a 20 gallon (Hagen) bought from the store a while back with a variety of (Tropica) plants. It happens to be Co2 injected,Pfertz added several times in a week , EcoComplete substrate, and lighting provided by a Coralife setup(65watts-1 bulb). Fish include several cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, cherry shrimp, sterbai corys, and a pair of Apistogrammas. Enjoy , i know i have and all is well so far without any concerns."
